  1. The  Handgun  -  an impact shot that has  appeared  in  two 
  2. photo magazines as an indication of technique.

  4. The set up was very simple. A black background was used - I have
  5. a fairly large piece of black velvet which absorbs almost all 
  6. light giving a full black.

  8. The gun - a replica - was positioned and focused on with the 
  9. cam era on a tripod - to retain the correct point of focus.  The
  10. smoke is cigar smoke blown down the gun barrel just before
  11. exposure  and the light source a single flash connected to the
  12. camera on an  extension lead.
  13.  
  14. Several  flash angles were tried to get the desired effect. 
  15. Exposure was calculated manual using a set aperture for depth of
  16. field and dividing that into the flash guide number.  The
  17. resulting figure is the FLASH to SUBJECT distance - note,  NOT
  18. necessarily  the camera to subject distance. It is flash to
  19. subject that matters.
